Lock Switch “Superlocker” for Kia Sorento JC

For which vehicles:

The Lock switch “Super Locker” was developed for the KIA Sorento JC and JC FL (BJ 2002-2009) with automatic 4-wheel drive.

Why it was developed:

The automatic control of the KIA Sorento JC 4-wheel drive does not work correctly in all possible situations. The 4WD of this vehicle uses a rigid drive of the rear axle, the front axle is then driven more or less with a in oil running in clutch. This system has the disadvantage that it has a delay in the engagement of the front axle and the required rotational speed equalization between the two axle takes place through the coupling.

So is (in depending on the installed 4-wheel drive controller), for example:

  • below 7 km/h is no or only minimal 4-wheel drive available
  • when the vehicle has so deadlocked, that it can no longer move, no  4-wheel drive is also available
  • In normal mode (switch position, ‘Auto’ of the original selector) is the front axle with max. approximately 70% of the maximum force driven
  • in the reduction (switch position, ‘Low’ of the original selector) the 4-wheel drive is mostly active and on grippy road in cornering is too much tension in the drive train

What can it:

For these reasons and because of the KIA Sorento offers no more choice of the 4-wheel drive, there is the lock switch. It extends the standard switch positions ,Auto / Low’ by the switch positions ,2WD and Lock’ in the normal and low (reduction) mode:

  • 2WD: pure rear-wheel drive, front axle is completely decoupled, shows ‘2WD’ in switch position indicator*,
on slippery surfaces, slippery road conditions and/or too much power use is a risk, that the rear of the vehicle may break out.
  • Auto: electronically controlled 4-wheel drive, original equipped function, shows ‘Auto’ in switch position indicator*
  • Lock: Permanent locked 4-wheel drive, 50%-50% power distribution between front and rear axle, shows ‘4WD symbol’ in gauge cluster or ‘Lock’ in switch position indicator*
in normal dry and wet road conditions, as well as on solid ground, the 4-wheel drive train can brace (no rotation compensation between front and rear axle), with frequent use and under heavy load under these conditions the drive system can be destroyed. Intended only for short-term operation.
  • Low 2WD: pure rear-wheel drive in reduction, front axle is completely decoupled, shows ‘LOW’ in gauge cluster, shows ‘2WD’ in switch position indicator*,
on slippery surfaces, slippery road conditions and/or too much power use is a risk, that the rear of the vehicle may break out.
When using this mode, be careful with the throttle, because the total engine torque amplified by the reduction works only on the rear axle, it can be damaged by careless use.
  • Low Auto: electronically controlled 4-wheel drive in reduction, original equipped function, shows ‘LOW’ in gauge cluster, shows ‘Auto’ in switch position indicator*
  • Low Lock: Permanent locked 4-wheel drive, 50%-50% power distribution between front and rear axle, shows ‘LOW’ in gauge cluster, shows ‘4WD symbol’ in gauge cluster or ‘Lock’ in switch position indicator*
in normal dry and wet road conditions, as well as on solid ground, the 4-wheel drive train can brace (no rotation compensation between front and rear axle), with frequent use and under heavy load under these conditions the drive system can be destroyed. Intended only for short-term operation.

Switching between the different modes of operation can be done while driving, but it should be not a big difference in speed between front and rear axles. The change in and out of the operating modes LOW… can only be done during the complete standstill of the vehicle (as in the standard equipment).

What are the advantages and applications:

to be done…..

Options:

  • Switch position display for the gauge frame*
  • ABS deactivation in Low Lock. Please observe the local laws, the vehicle may lose its operating licence as a result of this function (+ €10,-)

Products:

The lock switch is designed for the left hand driven Sorentos, the customer expierence had shown, that the product fits also in the right hand driven models, only the knob is than on the other side in the panel.
